Cristiano Ronaldo has announced he wishes to join a Championship club before retiring.
Ronaldo’s declaration came as a surprise given that seasoned football watchers are accustomed to seeing him grace the world’s most glittering stages. He somewhat camouflaged his desire to sample the delights of Championship football by insisting that he merely wanted to rejoin his former club Manchester United.
Given that Manchester United are on the same inevitable slide down to the second tier of English football that occurred when Matt Busby departed in the late 1960s, he can expect to be battling with the likes of Leeds United and Ipswich Town down in the nether reaches of the Championship.
United, whose relegation will no doubt be assured by a Carlos Tevez backheel on the final day of the season, (though unlike Denis Law, we expect he will celebrate) can do little to arrest this decline. Ronaldo has said that playing at Griffin Park is one of the his few many remaining ambitions in football that he has yet to realise.
Expect a thunderous reaction when he gets pipped for the Player of the Season by Jermaine Beckford.
