Huddersfield Town Defender Nicknamed After Legendary Character In Cool Runnings

What a day it is to be a Huddersfield Town fan, as the club returned to the English top flight for the first time in 45 years. They trounced Crystal Palace 3-0 away from home in their opening game and the result puts them top of table…. for now.

Huddersfield were many people’s favourites to be relegated this season, but two goals from new signing Steve Mounié and an own goal from Crystal Palace’s Joel Ward helped them on their way to their first ever three points in the Premier League.

It’s a stunning start by Huddersfield, and we think we’ve already found our Huddersfield cult hero.

Defender Mathias Jorgensen was speaking to the BBC after the match, and he explained why he wears the name ‘Zanka’ on the back of his shirt, rather than and not Jorgensen:

It has been a nickname since I was 10 and it stuck. It comes from the character in the film Cool Runnings. I wanted it on my shirt.

Is this the best response any footballer has said in relation to their nickname?

Many would call the Danish defender’s nickname unusual but if you were a fan of the movie, we believe you will be a fan of the Huddersfield man now.

Although Jorgensen spells Zanka with a ‘Z’ instead of Sanka, he must be the first footballer in history to have a nickname after the American sports comedy film.

Zanka started out his footballing career with Danish side FC Copenhagen before signing with Dutch side PSV Eindhoven and in 2014 he returned to his native club in Denmark before signing for Huddersfield this summer, on a three-year deal.

He has also represented Denmark on no fewer than 11 occasions.

‘Sanka ya dead? yeah man’ is the famous catchphrase associated with the film but Huddersfield Town and Zanka are alive and kicking after their impressive victory this afternoon.
